The Jeep Wrangler YJ is the first generation of Jeep Wrangler four-wheel drive small off-road vehicles, rebadging and succeeding Jeep's CJ series, which was produced from 1944 to 1986. The first Wrangler (internally "YJ") was launched in 1986 and ran through 1995.

The Buick 350 cu in (5.7 L) V8, AMC 232 I6, and AMC 327, 360 V8 engines in the FSJ Wagoneer and trucks used a 'nailhead' pattern TH400—also known as a "unipattern," as it was used by many other manufacturers (including Rolls-Royce and Jaguar) with an adapter ring—from 1965 to 1972.
The Jeep version is labelled "NV(NP)241J." This is not the NV241OR transfer case found in the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, which uses a 4.0 low range and has a reinforced case. Dodge uses a 241DHD, which has a reinforced case but the 2.72 low range. The Jeep Grand Cherokee/Commander line no longer offers a part-time transfer case option.
Jeep YJ models were manufactured between 1986 and 1995 at Brampton Assembly, and subsequently at the Toledo South Assembly plant. [7] A major difference in the 1987–1995 models were the rectangular headlights, which reverted to rounded ones in the TJ and then JK versions. In 2006, Wrangler production was moved to Toledo Complex. [8]

The Dana 20 is generally compatible with the "big hole" Dana 18. One exception is the version used with the THM400 in full-size Jeep trucks, which used a different spline number on the input gear. Applications: Jeep CJ; Jeep SJ; 1963-1979 Willys-Overland Jeepster; 1979 International Scout with 727TF AT uses the 23 spline 26 tooth gear.
