During the British Raj, the Madras Presidency was made up of 26 districts, 12 of which were part of the boundaries of the present-day Tamil Nadu, namely, Chingleput, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, North Arcot, Madras, Madura, Ramnad, Salem, South Arcot, Tanjore, Tinnevely, and Trichinopoly.

These administrative units are classified based on the district. There are 38 districts in Tamil Nadu and for revenue administration purposes, each district is divided into divisions, which are further divided to Taluks. [1] Each of these Taluks have a list of revenue villages under them. Tahsildar is the head of these Taluks.

Most districts have a distinct headquarters; but the districts of Mumbai City in Maharashtra, [7] Kolkata in West Bengal, Hyderabad in Telangana, and Chennai in Tamil Nadu are examples where there are no distinct district headquarters, although there are district collectors.
In the Indian administrative context, states adopt various nomenclatures for their sub-district divisions, including Tehsil, Taluk, Circle, Subdivision, and Mandal. Notably, Tehsil predominates in North Indian states , whereas Taluk is prevalent in South Indian states .
