In the United States, the 1991 940 was offered in three versions: the 940 GLE used a DOHC 16-valve version of the 2.3-litre engine (B234) with a 6000 rpm redline. The 940 Turbo used a turbocharged 2.3-litre engine (B230FT), and the top-end 940 SE (also turbocharged) included body-coloured trim, and various premium features (leather, power seats/moonroof, etc.) as standard equipment.

This inline three-cylinder Turbocharged direct injection (TDI) diesel engine is the powerplant of the Volkswagen Lupo 3L and Audi A2 3L, with a low fuel consumption of only 2.99 L/100 km (94.5 mpg ‑imp; 78.7 mpg ‑US) – hence the "3L" tag.
The B36 was discontinued in 1973, although it was no longer used in trucks after 1966. It was the last petrol truck engine built by Volvo and the only V8 engine used in any vehicle, except for the newer Yamaha-built units used in the Volvo XC90 and S80.
