These six-string guitars were still smaller than the modern classical guitar.

The classical guitar, also known as Spanish guitar, [1] is a member of the guitar family used in classical music and other styles. An acoustic wooden string instrument with strings made of gut or nylon , it is a precursor of the modern steel-string acoustic and electric guitars , both of which use metal strings .
The earliest extant six-string guitar was built in 1779 by Gaetano Vinaccia (1759 – after 1831) [5] [6] [7] in Naples, Italy. The Vinaccia family of luthiers is also known for developing the mandolin. This guitar shows no sign of modification from a double-course guitar. [1] The authenticity of guitars before the 1790s is often in question.
