The Chevrolet "big-block" engine is a term for a series of large-displacement, naturally-aspirated, 90°, overhead valve, gasoline-powered, V8 engines; that were developed and produced by the Chevrolet Division of General Motors, from the 1950s until present.
The operational usefulness of the Hector was restricted by engine cooling problems, which made it unsuitable for operations in the tropics and the Hereford was found to be unsuitable for combat, because its Dagger VIII engines were noisy and unreliable. The Dagger was also used in the experimental Martin-Baker MB 2 fighter.
Other problems may be implicated in the case of older vehicles equipped with carburetors. Weak, disconnected, or mis-connected throttle return springs, worn shot-pump barrels, chafed cable housings, and cables which jump their tracks in the throttle-body crank can all cause similar acceleration problems.
In the end, over 600 design faults, mainly in the Crossley engine, were overcome. One of the strategies used to minimise problems was to de-rate the engine to 1045 hp (officially quoted as 1000 hp). Rumours persisted that the engine was either war surplus, or formerly from a sub-maritime application. [3]

Otto & Cie reorganized as Gasmotoren-Fabrik Deutz , management picked Daimler as factory manager, bypassing even Otto, and Daimler joined the company in August, taking Maybach with him as ...

At the time it was an extremely competitive design, offering at least 1,300 hp (970 kW) from a 23-liter displacement; the contemporary Rolls-Royce Merlin offered about 1,000 hp (700 kW) from 27 L displacement, while the contemporary German competitor to the 35-litre displacement Junkers Jumo 211 engine, the Daimler-Benz DB 601 inverted V12 ...
