Rose Petal Place was first introduced in the 1980s as an animated film which also included a corresponding toy line and playsets. Rose Petal dolls were markedly similar to the fruit and dessert-themed Strawberry Shortcake dolls, also made by Kenner. Strawberry Shortcake Meets the Berrykins is a 1985 Canadian animated television special that premiered on March 29, 1985. This is the third and final Strawberry Shortcake television special from Nelvana Limited and the last one to feature the American Greetings character up until DIC revived the franchise for a new generation in 2003.
On March 28, 1980, [6] the special debuted on independent stations [4] in over 90 U.S. cities; [2] [6] [nb 1] it aired on WNEW (now WNYW) in the New York City market, [5] and on KTLA in Los Angeles. [2] Kenner launched a collection of dolls and toys based on the special, concurrently with the original broadcast.
