AAMCO Transmissions Inc. is an American transmission-repair franchise founded by Robert Morgan [1] and Anthony A. Martino (who used the first letter of each name to form the names AAMCO and later MAACO) in 1957 in Philadelphia.
In 2006, its parent holding company, American Driveline Systems, Inc. acquired AAMCO Transmissions as part of their portfolio and it was combined with the company. Now It operates totally separated under the same owner and parent holding company. Cottman Transmission and Total Auto Care celebrated its 50th anniversary of business in 2012. [7]
He, along with Robert Morgan, was a co-founder of the AAMCO transmission repair franchise in 1963, the name for which was created as an acronym of his initials. After selling his interest in AAMCO in 1967, he founded the anagrammed acronym MAACO autobody and paint-service franchise in 1972, of which he remained the CEO until his 2008 death.
Ten years before MAACO's founding, Martino had launched AAMCO Transmissions with partner Robert Morgan. He created both names by using the first letters from his name (Anthony A. Martino). In 1967, with close to 500 stores in operation, Martino sold AAMCO to Morgan. In 1972, Martino opened a pilot auto painting center in Wilmington, Delaware.
The TH400 AMC case was used until the end of 1979 model production. The 232 cu in (3.8 L) I6 used in 1970-72 Jeep DJ "Postal Jeep" was backed up by the Borg-Warner T-35 3-speed automatic. At the time of the acquisition, Kaiser-Jeep was using a GM 2-speed Powerglide transmission in the DJ-5A (with the GM-sourced 2.5L I4).
Today, AAMCO is the world’s largest franchisor of transmission specialists and car repair shops, operating about 700 franchise stores in the United States, Canada.
