In 1902, the high school took over the entire building, but it was judged inadequate for the purpose by the school committee. It was not until 1913 that land for this school was purchased, with the first building completed in 1915. It was designed by Walter Fontaine, a local architect, who also designed the 1925 addition and the junior high school.
It is a large H-shaped building, with a central section flanked by symmetrical projecting bays on either side. It has a hip roof with a deep dentillated eave, and pilastered corners. The main entrance is set under broad arch at the center, with a Palladian window above. [4] Above the front door is the following inscription: 1644 AMES SCHOOL 1897
