Following a name change to Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong, they played their first gig in January 2007 and released their debut single "Lucio Starts Fires" on 8 October. In the same year, the band supported Babyshambles , Dizzee Rascal , Cansei de Ser Sexy and Kaiser Chiefs , and completed their first headlining tour across the UK in December.
Joseph Antony Bernays is an English singer, drummer and actor who works under the pseudonyms Joe van Moyland and Joe Lean. He was frontman in the band Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong and previously drummed for The Pipettes. As an actor, he was best known for his role as Thomas Tallis on The Tudors.

The band was formed in 2010 in Brighton by school-friends and former Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong band members, singer/guitarist Tom Dougall (younger brother of Rose Elinor Dougall, formerly of The Pipettes), guitarist Dominic O'Dair and bassist Maxim "Panda" Barron along with Gloucester born drummer Charlie Salvidge and Spanish keyboard player [4] Alejandra Diez. Since 2008, The Voluntary Butler Scheme has toured with Duke Special, Joe Lean & the Jing Jang Jong, Brakes, Jason Lytle (Grandaddy) & Adam Green. In July 2008 The Voluntary Butler Scheme did a session on the Dermot O'Leary's BBC Radio 2 show - performing "Trading Things In" and a cover of "Build Me Up Buttercup".
