A bankable feasibility study for the Thar Coal Mines Rail connectivity with the National Railways Network was carried out between July 2019 and March 2020. [5] The trilateral agreement spanning 760 kilometers was signed by Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan, aiming to significantly reduce cargo delivery times between Uzbekistan and Pakistan by approximately five days.
The project includes the construction of a circular railway track for Rawalpindi which will also be included in the Leh Expressway project. [2] The track will be 100 km long connecting Islamabad and Rawalpindi. [3] The project was expected to be completed in 2023 but has not yet been completed. [1]
In 2005, the Ministry of Transport revisited the project and carried out a feasibility study. In 2007, the Asian Development Bank provided Rs. 1 billion (US$3.5 million) to conduct a study on the project. [3] The initial plan called for an 82 km (51 mi) rail network with 60 stations to be constructed in four separate phases.
