The Save-On-Foods brand was launched in British Columbia in 1982 by Overwaitea Foods, which had been founded in 1915 and was later purchased by Jimmy Pattison in 1968. Most Overwaitea branded stores were gradually converted to Save-On-Foods stores beginning in the 1980s, with the last two remaining Overwaitea stores switching in 2018.
In 2012 the chain added a new location in Vancouver's Olympic Village complex, billed as an "Express Urban Fare", being half the size of most other locations. [1] A fifth location, the first outside Vancouver, was opened in a converted Cooper's Foods store in Kelowna also in 2012. A sixth location was opened in uptown Calgary in 2019.

No Frills took the former location of Save-On-Foods in summer of 2023. Unlike Save-On, No Frills cannot be accessed from the mall. On November 18, 2015, Edmonton City Centre announced that it planned to relocate and significantly upgrade its food court as part of a $41.3-million redevelopment investment that would revitalize the entire retail experience of the downtown property.
