Spem in alium (Latin for "Hope in any other") is a 40-part Renaissance motet by Thomas Tallis, composed in c. 1570 for eight choirs of five voices each. It is considered by some critics to be the greatest piece of English early music .
As no records about the birth, family or childhood of Thomas Tallis exist, almost nothing is known about his early life or origins. Historians have calculated that he was born in the early part of the 16th century, towards the end of the reign of Henry VII of England, and estimates for the year of his birth range from 1500 to 1520. Although the phrase at the title of this entry is quoted and requoted all over the internet using alium, this appears to be wrong, unless there is a Latin idiom where these two words can be used interchangeably. In the meaning "who acts through others, acts of himself," the word alius would be the correct latin usage.
