Joseph Lonardo (Italian pronunciation:; October 20, 1884 – October 13, 1927), also known as "Big Joe", was an American mobster who became the first crime boss of the Cleveland crime family, which he structured from a number of competing organized crime gangs.

Alfonso Polizzi [1] was born in Siculiana, Sicily, Italy, on March 15, 1900, to Raimondo [2] [3] and Giovannina (née Indelicato) Polizzi. [2] [4] He emigrated from Italy to the United States with his family in 1909. [5] [6] His father, a blacksmith, [7] settled the family on Woodland Avenue in one of Cleveland's Italian enclaves. [6]
By the early 1920s, the Cleveland mafia had taken over the Mayfield Road Mob and become the dominant criminal organization in Cleveland. [7] It was led by boss Joseph "Big Joe" Lonardo. [8] While visiting family in Italy, Lonardo lost control of the Cleveland mafia to Salvatore "Black Sam" Todaro and Joseph "Big Joe" Porrello.

Angelo Lonardo and several other former members of the Lonardo gang subsequently became affiliated with Frank Milano's Mayfield Road Mob, which was based in Cleveland's Little Italy and affiliated with the Syndicate, a Jewish mob group headed by Moe Dalitz. [3]
