The library has five floors with a total floor area of 11,250 m 2 (121,100 sq ft) and 866 m (2,841 ft) of shelving. There are three reading areas with a seating capacity for 350 readers and several special study rooms, air conditioned auditorium with 145 seats and a conference room with 30 seats.

The National Library and Documentation Services Board was established under the act No: 51 of 1998 [1] succeeding the Sri Lanka National Library Services Board which was established in 1970. The board is placed under the Ministry of Education. The present Board of Directors consists of 11 members including a full-time Chairman.

The library was built in 1933 and is Sri Lanka's second main public Library, only rivalled by Colombo Public Library [2] During the early 1980s, it was one of the biggest libraries in Asia, containing over 97,000 books and manuscripts.
