Betsy Byars (née Cromer; August 7, 1928 – February 26, 2020) was an American author of children's books.Her novel Summer of the Swans won the 1971 Newbery Medal. In a 1975 book review, Newgate Callandar of The New York Times wrote "James is an exceedingly good writer, and her detective, Adam Dalgliesh, is one of the more unusual ones in action today. Nevertheless, 'The Black Tower' is so slow-moving that it will try the patience of most readers — and that has to be the besetting sin of a crime novel." [1]
Center is the author of several books, which she has called "bittersweet comic novels." Her first novel, The Bright Side of Disaster (2006), was optioned by Varsity Pictures, and her sixth, How to Walk Away (2018), [5] was a New York Times bestseller and Book of the Month Club pick for May 2018 and a Target Book Club pick for July 2019.
Her first children's book, "B" is for Betsy, was published in 1939. She was inspired by Elizabeth Hamilton, juvenile department editor at Harcourt Brace to write about the experiences of American children. [ 2 ]
