A wilderness study area (WSA) contains undeveloped United States federal land retaining its primeval character and influence, without permanent improvements or human habitation, and managed to preserve its natural conditions.
This is a list of some of the wilderness study areas (WSA) in the United States as of December 2009. Wilderness study areas are designated lands that meet criteria of the Wilderness Act and are managed as wilderness by their parent agency, pending final determination by Congress.
The BLM Wilderness Study Area (WSA) was declared in May 1992 and would protect an area of about 26.5 km 2 (6,563 acres). The area was prospected by the dinosaur hunter Charles Hazelius Sternberg in the summer of 1921. [1]
The Sleeping Giant wilderness study area is an important habitat for mountain goats. The Sleeping Giant region is a roughly rectangular area bounded by Interstate 15 on the west and Holter Lake on the east, the south boundary runs from the Hilger Valley to the Ming Bar , and the north boundary runs from the northern edge of the Oxbow Bend of Holter Lake to Interstate 15.

Portions of the WSA's borders are formed by dirt roads, which also separates it from the Little City of Rocks and Gooding City of Rocks East WSAs. [2] [3] [4] The majority of the WSA is flat prairie divided by canyons, but the northern section of the WSA is composed of rolling hills. Willows can be found along some of the intermittent drainages.

The Gooding City of Rocks West WSA is contiguous (but divided by dirt roads) with three other WSAs in the Bennett Hills: Black Canyon , Gooding City of Rocks East , and Little City of Rocks .
