Six animals (two monkeys and four hamsters) died from radiation poisoning, after having been sent into space by NASA a day earlier in the first test of whether astronauts could safely endure prolonged exposure to cosmic rays. The animals had been inside a space capsule that had been kept at an altitude of 131,000 feet (40,000 m) by a balloon.
