The original 1,700-square-foot (158 m 2) restaurant was adjoined by a 9,000-square-foot (836 m 2) annex. The building housing the restaurant was formerly a branch of the Bank of America, whose former logo can be seen embedded in the corner of the building. The restaurant was established in 1951 and is considered a local landmark.
The original location was a converted bait shack at the end of the Balboa Pier in Newport Beach. The restaurants are designed with a retro 1940s/1950s atmosphere. As of 2024, most locations are in Southern California, but there are also locations in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and in Harry Reid International Airport. [1]

In 1905, the Pacific Electric street cars ran to Newport; in 1906 the line continued to Balboa Peninsula and Balboa Pavilion. In 1939 the old McFadden Wharf was removed after being damaged by a large storm in 1928. In 1940 the current Newport Municipal Pier was built.
