By Euclid's theorem, there are an infinite number of prime numbers. Subsets of the prime numbers may be generated with various formulas for primes.

The multiplicity of a prime which does not divide n may be called 0 or may be considered undefined. Ω(n), the prime omega function, is the number of prime factors of n counted with multiplicity (so it is the sum of all prime factor multiplicities). A prime number has Ω(n) = 1.
Mersenne primes take their name from the 17th-century French scholar Marin Mersenne, who compiled what was supposed to be a list of Mersenne primes with exponents up to 257. The exponents listed by Mersenne in 1644 were as follows: 2, 3, 5, 7, 13, 17, 19, 31, 67, 127, 257. His list replicated the known primes of his time with exponents up to 19.
