The siege of Osaka (大坂の役, Ōsaka no Eki, or, more commonly, 大坂の陣 Ōsaka no Jin) was a series of battles undertaken by the Japanese Tokugawa shogunate against the Toyotomi clan, and ending in that clan's destruction. Divided into two stages, the winter campaign and the summer campaign, it lasted from 1614 to 1615.

In the 17th century, after the fall of Osaka to the forces of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu several survivors of the Toyotomi clan try to deliver a young prince to safety. They are betrayed by other survivors who want to enrich themselves under the pretext of re-establishing their clan.
The film begins from the siege and fall of Osaka castle and tells the fictionalized story of Senhime's later years after the death of Hideyori till her final confinement to the Buddhist temple. A more historical film about Senhime and the siege of Osaka Castle appeared in the mid-1950s entitled Princess Senhime, with Machiko Kyō in the title role.
In 1615, a grown Hideyori leads an army against the Tokugawa to claim leadership of Japan. The Tokugawa and its allies defeat the Toyotomi coalition at the Siege of Osaka, resulting in Hideyori's death. Ieyasu passes away in 1616, but the Tokugawa shogunate will go on to rule Japan and hold the peace for more than 250 years.
