Sir Humphry Davy, 1st Baronet, FRS, MRIA, FGS (17 December 1778 – 29 May 1829) was a British chemist and inventor who invented the Davy lamp and a very early form of arc lamp.
1800–1809 Humphry Davy invents the arc lamp when using Voltaic piles (battery) for his electrolysis experiments. 1802 William Murdoch illuminates the exterior of the Soho Foundry with gas. 1805 Philips and Lee's Cotton Mill, Manchester was the first industrial factory to be fully lit by gas.
A type of Davy lamp with apertures for gauging flame height. The lamp consists of a wick lamp with the flame enclosed inside a mesh screen. The screen acts as a flame arrestor; air (and any firedamp present) can pass through the mesh freely enough to support combustion, but the holes are too fine to allow a flame to propagate through them and ignite any firedamp outside the mesh.
A mercury arc lamp from a fluorescence microscope. A krypton long arc lamp (top) is shown above a xenon flashtube. The two lamps, used for laser pumping, are very different in the shape of the electrodes, in particular, the cathode (on the left). An arc lamp or arc light is a lamp that produces light by an electric arc (also called a voltaic arc).
The Davey Safety Lamp was made in London by Humphry Davy. George Stephenson invented a similar lamp but Davys invention was safer due to it having a fine wire gauze that surrounded the flame. This enabled the light to pass through and reduced the risk of explosion by stopping the "firedamp" methane gas coming in contact with the flame.
In December 1880, Brush Electric Company set up a central station to supply a 2-mile (3.2 km) length of Broadway with arc lighting. By the end of 1881, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Montreal, Buffalo, San Francisco, Cleveland and other cities had Brush arc lamp systems, producing public light well into the 20th century. [15]
The company was formed in a partnership between Tesla, Robert Lane and Benjamin Vale with Tesla given the task of designing an arc lighting system, a fast growing segment of the new electric light industry used mostly for outdoor lighting. Tesla designed an arc lamp with automatic adjustment and a fail-switch as well as
Work included repairing electrical machinery, such as armatures, transformers, and arc lamps. [1] [2] In 1894, Carlisle and Finch purchased the shop from General Electric, intending to continue the repair business and branch out into manufacturing. [1] [2] [3] The new company was incorporated on April 17, 1897, with Carlisle serving as president.
