The Ulysses S. Grant Home in Galena, Illinois is the former home of Ulysses S. Grant, the Civil War general and later the 18th president of the United States. The home was designed by William Dennison [ 3 ] and constructed in 1859 - 1860. [ 2 ]
The Ulysses S. Grant Home is a declared National Historic Landmark, and the Elihu B. Washburne House and Old Market House enjoy listings on the National Register. [ 1 ] [ 9 ] Aside from those structures, many buildings dating to the early history of Galena and Illinois are included within the district.
Grant returned victorious to Galena in 1865 and the citizens gave him an Italianate two-story brick house, today recognized as the Ulysses S. Grant Home State Historic Site. [63] He was selected as the candidate of the Republican Party for the 1868 presidential election. Grant was elected and served two four-year terms. He did not return to Galena.

He attempted to commute for a time and return on the weekends, but he and Julia decided to move to Washington. [ 1 ]
