Lewis Henry Morgan (November 21, 1818 – December 17, 1881) was a pioneering American anthropologist and social theorist who worked as a railroad lawyer. He is best known for his work on kinship and social structure, his theories of social evolution, and his ethnography of the Iroquois.
In 1950 he was appointed to the inaugural chair in anthropology at the Australian National University (ANU). [ 2 ] : 119 Raymond Firth who had served as Advisor and Acting Director of the Research School of Pacific (and Asian) Studies to plan the shape of ANU and Pacific Studies resigned in 1952 and Nadel was appointed Dean of the School.
