NRK1 eventually turned full-time HD, with the separate SD feeds shutting down approximately in 2016. The programming lineup has varied over the years, with an increased focus on daytime news beginning in the 2020s, with newscasts almost uninterrupted from 06:30-20:00 on weekdays.
The first television channel in Norway, NRK1 was started officially in 1960 (then under the name NRK). NRK had made television programs since 1953. A second television channel, TV 2 was started in 1992.
The station airs live self-produced commentary of sports events of football matches and where NRK does not have the TV rights, and simulcasted audio from NRK1 if NRK do have the TV rights. As of February 2024, NRK Sport had live broadcasts of, but not limited to: UEFA Europa League; UEFA Conference League; UEFA Women's Champions League
NRK initially set out to cover the entire country and had a monopoly on broadcasting in Norway. The monopoly came under intense pressure when Norwegian TV companies began broadcasting from abroad in addition to international cable TV. Cable TV started in 1982 and satellite TV in 1986 (the launch of TV3 in 1987 and TVNorge in 1988).
From 1 January 2018, Nyheter has the right of way on NRK2 to give sister channel NRK1 a more predictable schedule layout, following complaints from viewers that programs such as Med hjartet på rette staden were repeatedly interrupted due to extra news broadcasts on NRK1. As of January 2018, NRK2 wasn't programming between 6 am and 6 pm.
