After Hopkins County was created by the Texas Legislature in 1846, Tarrant was initially designated as the county seat, and a courthouse was constructed there in 1853. The Schwertner House – built in 1880 and located at 124 E. Stewart St. This house was built by Delso Smith as an Army Officer reception center during the Indian wars. It was bought by Mr. Schwertner in 1893. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places on August 25, 1983, reference: #83002986.
