Amur maple is treated either as a subspecies of Acer tataricum (Tatar maple), [3] or as a distinct species in its own right, Acer ginnala. [2] [4] [5] The glossy, deeply lobed leaves of subsp. ginnala distinguish it from subsp. tataricum, which has matt, unlobed or only shallowly lobed leaves; it is separated from subsp. tataricum by a roughly 3,000 km range gap across central Asia.
The leaves are opposite and simple, broadly ovate, 4.5–10 centimetres (1.8–3.9 in) long and 3–7 centimetres (1.2–2.8 in) broad, unlobed or with three or five shallow lobes, and matt green above; the leaf margin is coarsely and irregularly toothed; the leaf petiole is slender, often pink-tinged, 2–5 centimetres (0.79–1.97 in) long.
The flowers are in dense clusters, produced before the leaves in early spring, [5] with the seeds maturing in early summer. The fruit is a schizocarp of two single-seeded, winged samaras. The wing of each samara is about 3–5 cm (1 + 1 ⁄ 4 –2 in) long. The fruit of this species is the largest among the maples native to its range.
