Illinois Route 54 (IL 54) is a 109.35-mile-long (175.98 km) east–west highway in east-central Illinois. It passes through the cities of Clinton , Gibson City , and Onarga . Its western terminus is at Interstate 55 (I-55) in Springfield .
The extended highway was to be slightly straighter than Route 3. Between Jacksonville and Virginia, Route 78 was a shorter route. The same could be said for Route 85 from Alexis to Rock Island. However, these short cuts were not paved upon US 67's designation, so Temporary US 67 signage was erected along Route 3 in those areas.
Jacksonville is a city and the county seat of Morgan County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,616 at the 2020 census, [5] down from 19,446 in 2010. [6] It is home to Illinois College, Illinois School for the Deaf, and the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired, and was formerly home to MacMurray College.
In Medora, IL 111 branches off northeast while IL 267 travels northwest. Near Rockbridge, IL 267 turns northward. It then meets IL 108 north of Rockbridge. Heading north of it and Greenfield, IL 267 meets Interstate 72 (I-72) and US 36 at a diamond interchange. In Jacksonville, it turns into a five lane road and ends at I-72 Bus./IL 104. [4]
Initially, US 36 followed part of IL 106, IL 36, IL 3, IL 10, and IL 121 (which is newly built back then). A couple of portions were under construction. [2] In 1935, these state routes were either truncated or removed due to confusion (like IL 36) and redundancy. [3]
Jacksonville was established by European Americans on a 160-acre tract of land in the center of Morgan County in 1825, two years after the county was founded. The founders of Jacksonville, Illinois consisted entirely of settlers from New England.
US 45/52 intersects with Illinois Route 17 in Kankakee and Illinois Route 102 in Bourbonnais. Just west of Peotone, US 52 takes a westward course, and US 45 heads north. From this point on until its intersection with Cermak Road/22nd Street in Westchester, US 45 is also known as La Grange Road. In Frankfort, US 45 intersects with US 30.
