1916: St. Joseph's College for Women (now St. Joseph's University, New York) was founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood in response to the need for a day college for young women. It is the only historical women's college in Brooklyn, New York. It was renamed, became coeducational in 1970 and a university in 2022.

The university was founded in 1933 by Mildred King as the Monroe School of Business, a women's business school, in the West Farms section of the Bronx. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] The school's name came from nearby James Monroe High School , and the hope of the founder that graduates of the high school might enroll at her new school of business. [ 6 ]
