The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) was an international trade union.It came into being on 7 December 1949 following a split within the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU), and was dissolved on 31 October 2006 when it merged with the World Confederation of Labour (WCL) to form the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC).
The ITUC Regional Organisation for Africa (ITUC-Africa) is a regional organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation, representing trade unions from countries in Africa. There are 56 national trade union federations affiliated to ITUC-Africa, from 45 countries, and representing a total of 15 million workers.
It has a membership of 35 unions and eight 'pan-African federations' in 29 countries. In 2007, the federation merged with the ICFTU African Regional Organisation, forming the African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation. [1]
Shortly afterwards, at the first congress of CASL-FO in September 1959, 'FO' was removed from the name of the organization as it aspired to become the regional organization of ICFTU in sub-Saharan Africa. ICFTU did, however, not approve this request. CGT-FO also rejected these ambitions. [1] [2] [9]
It retained informal links with some ICFTU affiliates, and rejoined the ICFTU in 1966. [9] [10] Today it is affiliated with International Trade Union Confederation, the successor of ICFTU. [11] The GTUC is affiliated with various international trade union organizations, including the Organisation of Trade Unions of West Africa (OTUWA). [4]
He helped build the Trade Union Movement in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, as well as across Africa. He also served as the Africa Representative to the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU). In 1959, Mboya called a conference in Lagos, Nigeria, to form the first All-Africa ICFTU labour organization. [6]
