North Wheeling Historic District is a national historic district located at Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. The district encompasses 134 contributing buildings and one contributing object in a 2 1/2-block section of northern Wheeling, known as "Old Town". Most of the district consists of mid-to late-19th-century residential buildings.
The panhandle also includes West Virginia's two oldest counties: Hampshire (1753) and Berkeley (1772). West Virginia's historically most famous towns, Harpers Ferry and Charles Town, are at the eastern end of the eastern panhandle. Harpers Ferry is the easternmost town in West Virginia.
It is home to the Highlands, the largest retail complex in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia. Located near Triadelphia is the David Stewart Farm, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. [7]
Mountaineer Casino Resort is a thoroughbred racetrack and casino resort located on the Ohio River north of New Cumberland, West Virginia. It is owned by Vici Properties and operated by Century Casinos. It is notable for being the first race track in the United States to get slot machines and become a racino.
The U.S. state of West Virginia has 55 counties. Fifty of them existed at the time of the Wheeling Convention in 1861, during the American Civil War, when those counties seceded from the Commonwealth of Virginia to form the new state of West Virginia.
