This station began broadcasting in 1953 as a 1,000 watt daytime-only station on 1280 kHz licensed to Piedmont Radio Station, Inc. This company, owned and operated by Cary L. Graham, was part of the Cary L. Graham Stations Group along with WETO in Gadsden, WEIS in Centre and WANA in Anniston. [3] Graham sold WPID to Terrence J. Gladden in 1965. [4]

This 100.7 MHz frequency became available after WHMA-FM, an unrelated country formatted station at 100.5 MHz, known as "Alabama 100", moved to Atlanta in early 2001, and WANZ in Northport, Alabama, changed its dial position from 100.7 MHz to 100.5 MHz and began broadcasting from a taller tower near Vance, Alabama, in April 2003.
The WHMA-FM callsign and radio format were previously on 100.5, which moved all the way to metro Atlanta to become WWWQ (now WNNX) FM in January 2001. WHMA-FM began broadcasting in 1947 and owned by Consolidated Publishing which printed The Anniston Star newspaper. Licensed to Anniston, Alabama WHMA was a class C 100,000 watt FM.
