Illinois Route 83 (IL 83) is a 91.73-mile-long (147.63 km) major north–south state highway in northeast Illinois. It stretches from U.S. Route 30 (US 30, Lincoln Highway ) by Lynwood and Dyer, Indiana , north to the Wisconsin border by Antioch at Wisconsin Highway 83 (WIS 83).
Illinois's state route numbers originated in 1918 as State Bond Issues 1 through 46, used to finance the new roads. The numbers of the bond issues were then used to mark the highway routes along the way. Another series of bond issues were authorized in 1924 (47–185) and again were used to mark the roads they paid for.
SBI Route numbers that were superseded by other routes, US or state routes were often reused. For example, SBI Route 61 was originally assigned to a road segment in northeastern Illinois, but was reassigned to a route in western Illinois, sometime after 1937.
