The Montana Legislature established Sheridan County in 1913 from portions of Dawson and Valley Counties. It was named for American Civil War General Philip Sheridan. [3] In the 1920s and 1930s the county was a hotbed of communist organizing.

Smith is the only coach in Sheridan County to have ever won a State Football title. In 1997, the Plentywood Wildcat American football team also reached the state championship, losing to Frenchtown 27-20 after being up 20–7 at half time.
Redstone is an unincorporated community in Sheridan County, Montana, United States. Redstone is located on Montana Highway 5, 18 miles (29 km) west of Plentywood. The community had a post office from 1903 [3] until March 9, 2013; it still has its own ZIP code, 59257. [4] [5] It is near the confluence of the Muddy River and Eagle Creek.
