Bulawayo (/ b ʊ l ə ˈ w ɑː j oʊ /, /-ˈ w eɪ oʊ /; [3] Northern Ndebele: Bulawayo) is the second largest city in Zimbabwe, and the largest city in the country's Matabeleland region. [4] The city's population is disputed; the 2022 census listed it at 665,940, [ 5 ] while the Bulawayo City Council claimed it to be about 1.2 million.
During the UDI period from 1965 to 1979, English was retained as the official language of the unrecognised state of Rhodesia. [7] Rhodesia's successor, the short-lived unrecognized state of Zimbabwe Rhodesia, designated English the "only official language" of the country. [8] Zimbabwe Rhodesia was succeeded by Zimbabwe in 1980.
