Each Masonic jurisdiction is free to standardize (or not standardize) its own ritual. However, there are similarities that exist among jurisdictions.
The Coptic Orthodox Church has a very sumptuously printed set of their books, edited by Gladios Labib, published at Cairo (Katamãrus, 1900–1902; Euchologion, 1904; Funeral Service, 1905). These books were first grouped and arranged for the Coptic Catholic Church by Raphael Tuki, and printed at Rome in the eighteenth century.
The service is composed of Psalms, ektenias (litanies), hymns and prayers. In its outline it follows the general order of Matins [note 2] and is, in effect, a truncated funeral service. Some of the most notable portions of the service are the Kontakion of the Departed [note 3] and the final singing of "Memory Eternal" (Slavonic: Vyechnaya Pamyat).
Within this service are several texts with rubrics stating that they should be said or sung by the priest or clerks. The first few of these texts are found at the beginning of the service, while the rest are prescribed for the burial itself. These texts are typically divided into seven, and collectively known as "funeral sentences".
