The McNeese Cowboys football program is the intercollegiate American football team for McNeese State University located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The team competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and are members of the Southland Conference. McNeese's first football team was fielded in 1940.

Keith Smith (born March 20, 1980) is an American former professional football player who was a cornerback in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the McNeese State Cowboys before being selected by the Detroit Lions in the third round of the 2004 NFL draft.
Starring finished his time at McNeese state with 3,083 passing yards (7th all time) and 1,906 rushing yards (12th). He also won three SLC track and field titles, two in the high hurdles and one in the long jump, and was named All-American for track and field.
