In New Zealand it is found from Stewart Island in the south north to the Three Kings Islands and east to the Chatham Islands. [6] This species inhabits coastal waters down as deep as approximately 60 m (200 ft). It is typically found swimming above sandy bottoms in the vicinity of rocky reefs. [5]
