John Dalton was born on 5 or 6 September 1766 into a Quaker family in Eaglesfield, near Cockermouth, in Cumberland, England. [ 3 ] [ 4 ] His father was a weaver. Sir William Dalton, third son of the Mayor of Hull and a member of the Council of the North, acquired the manors of East and West Haukswell in 1631.He died in 1649, leaving the estate to his grandson, William Dalton, whose father John Dalton, a lieutenant-colonel in the Royalist army, had been killed in action when escorting the queen in 1646.
Dalton died in his post in 1869. His remains are interred under the main altar of the present cathedral, built in 1892, which is currently inactive. [4] In August 2018, Bishop Dalton, along with the Donnelly family were exhumed from the crypt and buried in the Harbour Grace Roman Catholic Cemetery. This was due to the cathedral being sold.
