A 1915 stamp of Panama. Panama was formerly a department of Colombia and used overprints of Colombian stamps from 1878 until it gained independence in 1903. However, from 1903 to 1905 sets of stamps with overprints were still used and it was only in 1906 that the first printed stamps by the Panamanian postal administration were produced with República de Panamá.
The Canal Zone Postal Authority requisitioned 50,000 of the 1¢ stamp from Panama for overprinting at Mount Hope and Panama sent over the Vallarino 1¢ stamp. On January 28, 1924, these stamps were overprinted at Mount Hope. Panama was billed for the cost of this overprinting.
In 1966, Panama followed the U.S. in changing the composition of their silver coins, with copper-nickel-clad 1 ⁄ 10 and 1 ⁄ 4 balboa, and .400 fineness 1 ⁄ 2 balboa. One-balboa coins, at .900 fineness silver, were issued that year for the first time since 1947.

Panama's contribution to the 1955 treaty was its consent to the United States occupation of the bases outside of the Canal Zone that it had withheld a few years earlier. Approximately 8,000 hectares of the republic's territory were leased rent-free for 15 years for United States military maneuvers.
