The structure, adjacent to San Agustin Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic educational center. The San Agustin de Laredo Historic District is a historical district that covers what was once the original city of Laredo, Texas that was established by Don Tomás Sánchez. Today, the district is located in Downtown Laredo.
In 1759, Bishop Francisco de San Buena Ventura of Guadalajara visited the town. The next year, he sent a resident priest to Laredo to construct a small mission chapel. In 1778, a stone church was erected to accommodate over two hundred families. In 1789, San Agustin parish was established in Laredo by the diocese. [3]

Tamayo was ordained a priest at Corpus Christi Cathedral in Corpus Christi by Bishop Thomas Drury for the Diocese of Corpus Christi on July 11, 1976. [3] After his 1976 ordination, the diocese assigned Tamayo as associate pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Corpus Christi along with chaplain to the local branch of the Catholic Daughters of America (Junior Division).
