Festival (stylized as Festival! ) is a 1967 American documentary film about the Newport Folk Festivals of the mid-1960’s, and the burgeoning counterculture movement of the era, written, produced, and directed by Murray Lerner .
The Newport Pop Festival, held in Costa Mesa, California, on August 3–4, 1968, was the first music concert ever to have more than 100,000 paid attendees. Its sequel, billed as Newport 69 , was held in Northridge, California , on June 20–22, 1969, and had a total attendance estimated at 200,000.

The Newport Folk Festival is an annual American folk-oriented music festival in Newport, Rhode Island, which began in 1959 as a counterpart to the Newport Jazz Festival. The festival was founded by music promoter and Jazz Festival founder George Wein , music manager Albert Grossman , and folk singers Pete Seeger , Theodore Bikel , and Oscar Brand .

It was the first multi-day outdoor hippie rock festival at an undeveloped site. [1] The line-up included bands the Grateful Dead, Santana, and others. [2] The festival was held the next year on labor Day weekend August 30 and September 1, 1969 in Tenino, Washington, and finally on August 28 until September 8, 1970 in Washougal, Washington.
