The original Littlewoods brand was a shopping catalogue and retail business headquartered in Liverpool, and was bought by the Barclay brothers in 2002. [1] In 2009, Littlewoods Direct was rebranded as Very.co.uk, shifting its focus to online retailing and a younger market.
In 2000, The Moores family sold the Littlewoods Pools business to Rodime, a shell business part owned by Bank of Scotland. At that stage, Littlewoods' football pools still had a million people playing a week and the sale, for £160m, included its online venture bet247.co.uk and its phone betting arm Bet Direct.
The group is now amongst the largest online retailers in the UK, with annual sales of £2.13bn for the year to June 2024, and EBITDA up 8.4% to £267m [7] The group's brands are Very.co.uk, Littlewoods.com, Very Exclusive and Very Ireland (rebranded from 'Littlewoods Ireland' in July 2022). [8]
The website launched in the 1990s and in 2005, the physical stores were sold, leaving Littlewoods as a pure play online retailer. In 2010 a mobile enabled version of the site was launched, upgrading to include video and images in 2011. [2] In the first quarter of 2013/14, mobile sales accounted for over a third of total online sales. [3]
John came from a line of bricklayers, his great-grandfather Sidney Moores was one (1818–1884), as was his grandfather John Moores (1847–1910), though he eventually set up a small building contractors business, and was landlord of the Church Inn where the future owner of Littlewoods was born. John William Moores later became a site foreman.
