In 1956, when Bill Orban took a position with the Department of National Defence in Canada, he was tasked with designing a fitness program that would whip Royal Canadian Air Force pilots into shape.
He took a position at the Department of National Defence and was tasked to develop a fitness programme for Royal Canadian Air Force pilots, a third of whom were not considered fit to fly. [ 1 ] [ 3 ] In response to this brief he created the 5BX (5 Basic Exercises) plan for men and the XBX (10 Basic Exercise) plan for women. [ 2 ]

John Kearns Tett, DFC & (1916 – 1974) was a Canadian athlete, wartime military pilot, physical fitness educator, and public servant. In the 1950s, he fathered the 5BX (Five Basic Exercises) fitness program developed for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). The Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning in Kingston, Ontario is named after him.
