The Cherokee National Capitol (Cherokee: ᏣᎳᎩ ᎠᏰᎵ ᏧᏂᎳᏫᎢᏍᏗ ᎠᏓᏁᎸ [4]), now the Cherokee National History Museum, is a historic tribal government building in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Completed in 1869, it served as the capitol building of the Cherokee Nation from 1869 to 1907, when Oklahoma became a state. [5]
Near Ft. Gibson, US-62 begins to concur with State Highway 10, and the two routes stay joined through Tahlequah. US-62 starts to overlap State Highway 51 in Tahlequah as well; the two highways split up near Eldon. The route enters Adair County near Proctor. It intersects with US-59 in Westville before US-62 crosses the state line into Arkansas. [2]
The highways then enter Tahlequah, where SH-82 splits off from the other two routes. SH-82 runs through downtown Tahlequah before meeting SH-51 SPUR in the northwestern part of the city. SH-82 turns northwest, running through Gideon and Peggs. It has an interchange with the Cherokee Turnpike south of Locust Grove.
Park Hill is located south of the center of Cherokee County and is bordered to the north by Tahlequah, the county seat. U.S. Route 62 leads north to Tahlequah and southwest 25 miles (40 km) to Muskogee, while Oklahoma State Highway 82 leads south 31 miles (50 km) to Vian.
The American Legion Hut in Tahlequah City Park, jct. of E Shawnee St. and N. Brookside Ave., in Tahlequah, Oklahoma was built in 1937 and was listed on the National Register in 2006. It reflects WPA Standardized Style and is also known as Rhodes Pritchett American Legion Hut Post 50 and served as a meeting hall.
