Walkin' Wheels is an American brand of dog wheelchairs developed in 2001 by Mark C. Robinson in Amherst, New Hampshire [2] in memory of his pet, Mercedes. [3] The product is intended as a mobility aid for pets with mobility issues such as degenerative myelopathy , arthritis , paralysis , and neurological disorders .
Two variants with wheels were both awarded US patents in May 1957, [2] [3] and the first non-wheeled design that was called a "walker" was patented in 1965 by Elmer F. Ries of Cincinnati, Ohio. [4] The first walker to resemble modern walkers was patented in 1970 by Alfred A. Smith of Van Nuys, California. [ 5 ]
Vehicles supplied by the National Health Service had three wheels and were very lightweight, and therefore their suitability on roads amongst other traffic was often considered dubious on safety grounds. [6] The last ones were withdrawn from the road in 2003, 27 years after the end of production, though some are still in existence.
