It was a temple of Seon, a Korean branch of the Zen Buddhism. This religious school flourished in Korea in the 14th century but declined under the Joseon Dynasty and the temple was closed in the 16th century. Although it fell into disrepair, the site layout, reflecting the architectural practices of the monastic school, has been preserved.
