The Seikan Tunnel (Japanese: 青函トンネル, Seikan Tonneru or 青函隧道, Seikan Zuidō) is a 53.85 km (33.46 mi) dual-gauge railway tunnel in Japan, with a 23.3 km (14.5 mi) portion under the seabed of the Tsugaru Strait, which separates Aomori Prefecture on the main Japanese island of Honshu from the northern island of Hokkaido.
Horizontally, the service tunnel is located 30 m away from the main tunnel (centrelines) (3): Pilot tunnel. 3.6-5 metres wide. Sprayed concrete thickness 0.12-0.15 m. The depth of the pilot tunnel varies between 0 and 118 metres below the floor of the service tunnel. In the middle of the Tsugaru Strait the pilot tunnel was not constructed.
