Fire glass (also fire pit glass, fire rocks, fire beads or lava glass) is a type of tempered glass, chunks of which are used decoratively on fireplaces. Pieces of the glass are heaped around jets of burning gas, or around liquid ethanol , in order to conceal the jets and reflect the flames. [ 1 ]
Painted glass refers to two different techniques of decorating glass, both more precisely known by other terms. Firstly, and more correctly, it means enamelled glass , normally relatively small vessels which have been painted with preparations of vitreous enamel , and then fixed by a light firing to melt them and fuse them to the glass surface.
Goblets and pitchers were popular as glassblowing developed as an art form. Many early methods of etching, painting, and forming glass were honed on these vessels. Generally the desired colours only appear when the piece is fired, adding to the artist's difficulties.
