Clair de lune" (French for "Moonlight") is a poem written by French poet Paul Verlaine in 1869. It is the inspiration for the third and most famous movement of Claude Debussy 's 1890 Suite bergamasque .

It was published by Durand et cie in 1919. [10] It is scored for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani, harp and strings. [10]
Later, researchers discovered that a misinterpretation of a reference frequency had led to the playback speed being doubled. Once corrected, it became apparent that the recording was of a man, probably the inventor Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville himself, singing the French folk song "Au clair de la lune" at a slow pace.
