To the northeast is the 14,000 acres (57 km 2) master-planned community of Kingwood, which was annexed by the city of Houston in 1996. Kingwood is the largest master-planned community in Harris County.
The Doug Sanders Celebrity Classic was a golf tournament on the Champions Tour from 1988 to 1994. It was played in Kingwood, Houston, Texas at the Deerwood Club.. The purse for the 1994 tournament was US$500,000, with $75,000 going to the winner.

The West Lake Houston parkway starts just inside the developing portion of the Beltway 8 in a developing neighborhood. The parkway heads east, passing the beltway and passes through the neighborhood of Summerwood. In the neighborhood, the parkway turns north. The parkway passes through a very rural area as it heads north towards Atascocita.
